An improvement over a near perfect game
|
| Review Date: September 17, 2009 |
| Reviewer: Donovanonfire, From The D |
EA has really been stepping it up the last couple of years. They've created some great new original IP's like Dead Space, Army of Two, and the upcoming Dante's Inferno, but their crown jewel of late has been their NHL franchise. NHL 09 was a near perfect hockey simulation, but let it be stated that NHL 10 is not just a carbon copy of last years award winner, it is an improvment in almost ever aspect. From gameplay to controls, everything in NHL 10 has been polishd and tweeked to perfection. This is truly the best hockey game ever made. Period.
New Features:
Board Play - An integral part of hockey, board play is a fantastic new feature that adds both realism and strategy to the action. It also gives the game a more real, less arcade like pace.
Puck Physics - Basically, the puck movement is unpredictable, like it is in real life. Pucks will deflect of everything, hop over sticks, and flutter more as the ice gets choppy near the end of every period.
Post Whistle Skirmishes - Once the whistle blows a play dead, you can facewash, intimidate, slash and instigate a fight with the other teams players. You can use this to get retaliation penalties as well.
1st Person Fighting - Fighting has been refined, and you now feel and see every blow and jab. Not to mention fights are now meaningful and contain strategy which you can use as momentum during the rest of the game.
Crowd Look and Animation - The crowd reacts to each play, and goal accordingly. They boo players they don't like, they chant, they wave towels. The crowd actually feels organic for the first time, and their addition only adds to the realistic atmosphere.
Goalie/Player Animations - Goalies react better to pucks, they have more stylized saves that are fitting to the individual, and they seem unpredictable in their movement. Players also feel like they have actually weight, and there are a lot less unrealistic hits then before. You can also pass/shoot on your knees!
There are a lot more small refinements to the game that need to be seen to be believed. What really makes NHL 10 stand out is the attention to detail. It isn't perfect, but it's closer than last years, and is the closest any sports game has ever gotten to creating a sports simulation that lives and breathes with every movement you control. If you own NHL 09 sell it and get 10, you won't regret it. |
The Best Sports Video Game of All Time
|
| Review Date: September 17, 2009 |
| Reviewer: J. Mitchell, New York, NY United States |
That title sounds like hyperbole, but it's true from my perspective. I love sports video games and hockey most of all, and I thought NHL 09 was the best hockey game ever...until NHL 10 came around. I have probably played hundreds of hours of NHL 09 over the past year, and this game does an excellent job of taking everything that was good about that game and making it even better. I don't see myself getting sick of it anytime soon.
As a caveat, I do not play online. This is a review based on my single-player experience, which is my preferred way to play.
While the changes in NHL 10 are in large part subtle refinements of NHL 09, this isn't just a roster update. The "Be a GM" mode - formerly franchise mode - has been completely overhauled to give you GM-specific challenges and rewards as you play through the seasons. A few other new game modes - single playoff and single season modes, basically - have been added as well.
The main improvements in my opinion are found in the on-ice gameplay, which has been enriched by the ability to control the aim on passes, board play, the new fighting engine, scuffles after the whistle, better goalie animations, and better AI. The game experience is completely customizable and there are slider pre-sets for arcade-like, simulation-like, and intermediate gameplay (intermediate is the default).
Professional reviews will be able to tell you a lot more about this game than I will, so let me just say that everything you love about NHL 09 has only been improved. It's rare to see an EA Sports development team that really delivers and works hard year-after-year, and this team does exactly that. You can tell that there is a real passion and desire among the developers to make the best hockey game possible. They did it last year, and they did it again.
I have not encountered the AI problems that the other reviewer did in playing this game in single-player mode. Perhaps I am just used to the way the game plays, or perhaps that reviewer needs to explore the create a play option to get better performance from his AI teammates.
If you like hockey, buy this game. If you love sports games (and don't HATE hockey), buy this game. I've been let down by EA Sports many, many times in the past (most recently with Madden 10). This game is nothing short of triumphant. |
Lots of fun

| I haven't played the NHL series since NHL 04 for the PC, and I'm sorry I've been away from it for so long. This game is excellent and the addition of board play and the new controls (new for someone who hasn't played an updated version in 6 years) are very easy to learn and master. I downloaded and installed the software update from EA the first time I played and I have not experienced any of the issues that other reviewers have reported. Buy with confidence. |
a few upgrades of NHL 09
|
| Review Date: September 15, 2009 |
| Reviewer: L. Bailey, St. Louis, MO |
nothing in this game has changed to much..only real different game play is fighting along the boards for the puck, (which you dont use to to much) and an actual fighting system which had many people scratching there heads in NHL 09 on how to fight. other then that gameplays seems about the same, i noticed shots from the point give more realistic chances for rebound goals then in 09.
another really great upgrade is the GM mode. wow...this almost gets complex. players have trade values, buyouts, teams have rumors of whos on the chopping block, you can put 3 players you want traded into the rumor mill, you can tell other teams what your looking for ex. offensive defense athelitic or draft picks.
its such an upgrade over last years, your general manager actually has a reputation,
anyway this is a good game, my review kinda rambled and went on longer then i wanted but if your a fan of the NHL EA series i would suggest buying this, no turn offs that i can see nothing drastic has changed. enjoy |
EA Fixed the Freezing, Please Give them some Credit
|
| Review Date: November 2, 2009 |
| Reviewer: Don Squeek, Washington State |
Ok I'll admit when this game first came out it froze all the time. Now nearly 2 months later it never freezes at all. The updates worked miracles and EA deserves credit. It did something Fallout 3 couldn't. Fix the freeze problem.
Now with that out of the way I can review the actual game. First the new GM mode is awesome. Being able to buy out players and not have to have a minimum player count during the off season is great. You can truly build your team like a GM. The Be a Pro Mode is the same for last year expect I noticed you don't have to have crazy stats every game to get your A+ Rating. Before as a center you would need 3 Goals a game to stay in the top line. Its a lot more realistic this year with what stats its expects from you player.
As for the new game play, the Fighting engine is awesome and tons of fun. Board play becomes tedious at times but so is it in real life. All in all this game is a huge step forward over last year. Now that the updates fixed the glitches this is a must buy. But I do agree with the first reviewers that the freezes at the time of release made the game unplayable. Be happy they did something to fix it. NHL better then Madden 3rd year in a row. |
hockey fans need this game for ps3!

| This was the first game i got for my PS3 and the only game i have thus far, and i play it all the time! If you are a hockey fan, you better get this game. The graphics are top notch, the players actually look like the real players. The crowd is intense, they chant throughout the game...It feels like you are at the game. When you get to the playoffs, the fans have towels waving them and chanting "Go Home"....."MVP"....Its so realistic.....They even have the Stanley Cup Playoffs logo on the ice as well....GO BUY THIS GAME....GREAT HOCKEY GAME. |
Sore thumb warning, addictive gameplay in NHL 10!

I buy a lot of sports games, but hockey is not one that I buy every year. In fact it's been quite a few years since I have purchased one, but after having so much fun playing NHL 10 for the past few weeks I'm wondering why that is.
Almost all of the negative reviews up here are because of freezing issues and bugs when the game first launched, but I can
assure that the recent updates have cleared all of those up. The game somehow manages to feel like a real live breathing
hockey game, but still retaining the same level of fun that the NHL 94-95 games did so well. In fact, you can even choose
to simplify the controls to mimic the same controls from those early games.
The controls while complicated, are pretty intuitive and give you more control than you've ever had before in all facets of
the game. The new board play is easy to use and also does a good job of making the game more realistic to it's real life counterpart. The new fighting can happen frequently, but you also usually have the option of just skating away from an opponent who is looking to dance with you after the whistle.
The game is beautiful to watch, with lots of life like animations. The sounds are all authentic and dead on - hitting the post with a shot is frustrating but sounds really great. The AI goalies are pretty good so you will probably spend a good amount of time practicing your offense and deking defenseman. All in all, I can't recommend this game highly enough. NHL 10 is the greatest hockey game I've ever played. Now if I can just figure out a way to keep my thumbs from getting so sore. |
Amazing... As Always
